About Wicked On Broadway

When Wicked opened at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, it quickly became a defining moment in modern Broadway history. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, the musical explores the untold story of the witches of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival. Directed by Joe Mantello with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the production gained immediate attention for its scale, storytelling, and unforgettable score. It also launched the careers of its original stars, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, setting a new benchmark for big-budget Broadway productions.

Over the years, Wicked has built an impressive legacy. It won three Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for its original cast recording, which remains one of the most popular Broadway albums. The show has also been a major box office success, becoming one of the fastest productions to surpass $1 billion in Broadway revenue and generating billions more worldwide through international productions. Today, it ranks among the longest-running shows in Broadway history, with thousands of performances and a global fanbase.

More than two decades later, Wicked continues to draw packed audiences and remains a staple of New York City’s theater scene. Its elaborate set design, including the iconic Time Dragon and dramatic flying sequences, still feels fresh and exciting. Blending spectacle with emotional storytelling, the show continues to attract both longtime theater fans and first-time visitors, securing its place as one of Broadway’s must-see experiences.

Gershwin Theatre

The Gershwin Theatre, located at 222 West 51st Street in Midtown Manhattan, is the largest Broadway theater, seating around 1,900 guests. Opened in 1972 and named after George and Ira Gershwin, the venue stands out for its modern design, spacious layout, and excellent acoustics. Compared to older Broadway theaters, it offers more legroom, wider aisles, and a comfortable viewing experience, making it ideal for large-scale productions.

When choosing seats, it really depends on the kind of experience you want. If you prefer being close to the action, the Center Orchestra seats near the front offer an up-close view of the performers and their expressions. However, many theatergoers prefer sitting slightly further back in the center or in the Front Mezzanine, as these seats provide a more complete view of the stage, especially for shows with large sets and special effects.

For a balance between price and view, Side Orchestra and Mid Mezzanine seats are solid options. Even though they are slightly off-center, the theater’s wide layout ensures good sightlines. If you're on a budget, the Rear Orchestra and Rear Mezzanine are the most affordable choices. While these seats are farther away, the elevated design helps maintain a clear view, and the sound quality remains strong throughout the theater.
